Turned from figured big leaf maple of unknown origin, then scorched. When the right amount of heat meets the right wood for the right amount of time, the surface checks into a crust not unlike the hide of an alligator. The turned center is left bare, a smooth, pale eye in the middle of all that char.
Finished with a fine polishing wax. The blackened rim is crazed and dry to the touch, while the maple at the center stays warm and silky.
